Travelling to Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico has some interesting advantages in terms of travel for American citizens compared to other travel destinations. For one, Puerto Rico is already a territory of the United States of America. This means that no visa is necessary to travel here. Nor is there a requirement to have a passport. Additionally, the currency used in Puerto Rico is the same currency used in America, the United States Dollar (USD). Based on a cursory glance online, a flight from Atlanta to San Juan can be had at around $145 today, as long as you have had a valid negative COVID-19 test within the past three days. Next up is finding out where to stay during the trip. Fortunately, at Posada Colonial, lodging can be had for a mere $75 per night. So instead of staying at significantly more expensive hotels, we can spend less money here and more money elsewhere.

One interesting place in Puerto Rico that I would like to visit would be Old San Juan. Old San Juan is a historic district of Puerto Rico. For instance, once in Old San Juan I can go visit Castillo San Felipe del Morro. This place was established during the sixteenth century and used as a military fortification. Interestingly, El Morro was never defeated by any enemy forces, making it an unique landmark. Another interesting place is Casa Blanca, which is one of the oldest residences in San Juan. It was originally built for the very first governor of Puerto Rico, Juan Ponce de León. Unfortunately, he died before he was able to take residence in it.

Among other things to do are things like going out to eat at some great local restaurants. One of the main points of interest when it comes to foreign travel is experiencing new culture, and a big part of that is related to food. Since Puerto Rico has all kinds of influences onto it's own culture, there's a wide variety of food and local cuisine available at any given time. It doesn't have to be expensive either, since some restaurants in some places are not nearly as expensive as you would think. In fact, some places are cheap enough that you can easily bring along a friend and still be significantly under budget! Since Puerto Rico is a place with a lot of history, there are also museums of history to investigate. There are plenty of them where I am taking this trip, but the one I'm personally curious about is the Casa Blanca museum. Yes, this museum is based off the same place as mentioned before in this post. The museum is a collection of Puerto Rico's colonial history and for that reason should be very interesting.

The cost of the trip is going to be around $75 per night at the hotel I've chosen. So for a week-long trip, I would spend $525. With the food budget, I can spend $30 - $40 a day. On a seven day trip, this amounts to $280. When the cost of the flight is accounted for ($75 each way) this amounts to $955 spent on the trip. Therefore I can establish a budget of $1000 and remain perfectly fine financially.

Here is an itinerary of my trip:

  1. Nice information and I would love to travel here because of the simplicity with the currency, and to see this beautiful island. I would recommend adding a few more pictures of the areas you want to visit, it will make this page more visually appealing.
